10 Offline Tightwad Marketing Strategies to Help You Get More Clients

10 Offline Tightwad Marketing Strategies to Help You Get More Clients

Several years ago, in response to client requests for no-cost or low-cost marketing techniques, I coined the term “tightwad marketing”. My definition of tightwad marketing is the art of doing more with less, or using your creativity instead of your checkbook to get the word out about your business.
89691624
Even though the saying, “If you build it they will come” worked for Kevin Costner’s character in the movie, “Field of Dreams”, life doesn’t often imitate art. Usually the first thing that pops into someone’s mind when they think about marketing is, “I’ve got to place an ad.”
Place a few ads and soon your marketing budget has totally dried up. Statistics say that someone must see your ad six times in the same publication before thinking of using your business. If it’s a weekly or monthly publication, that could be six weeks to six months down the road, and you can’t afford to wait that long!
In order for the public to find your field of dreams, here are ten inexpensive ways to get started:
1. Define your USP – your Unique Selling Proposition – and use it in everything that you do. Make sure your customer knows what it is that you do that is unique to you and your business. Don’t make them struggle to answer the question of why they should do business with you instead of your competitor.
2. Create joint ventures with other businesses that complement yours. For example, if you’re a real estate agent, team up with a cleaning service, an interior decorator, and a personal chef to offer a nice packaged deal to a new home buyer.
3. Stress the benefits of what you do, not the product or service. There’s a great story that’s passed around about the world’s most successful insurance salesman, who, when asked what he did for a living, responded, “I buy life assurance.” Most people responded, “What do you mean?” to which he replied, “I buy life assurance for my clients at the best possible price. Would you like me to buy some for you?” Make your potential customer think, “I’ve got to get that!”
4. Become newsworthy! Send out media releases to announce a new service or product or sponsorship of a charity event. Create an event or a special day. Link what you do to an existing trend or news event. Talk about your personal story in the business, i.e. if you went broke and bounded back, started to create one product and ended up with another, etc. Issue an award or give something away. Conduct a survey and report the results. Write a letter to the editor.
5. Talk to your customers. Call 5 previous customers and find out what they liked and didn’t like about their dealings with you, and how you might better serve them in the future. Have them write testimonials that you can use. Ask and reward them for referrals.
6. Love what you do and become a model of what you’re selling. If you don’t absolutely love what you do and feel passionate about it, your customers are going to see right through you and not be convinced to buy what you are offering. For example, if you’re a car mechanic and your shop sits on a parking lot full of clunkers that don’t run, why would anyone hire you to repair their car?
Or, if you’re a landscaper and your lawn is full of weeds and crabgrass, who wants to hire you to beautify their yard? If you don’t truly feel passionate about your business and become a living model of that business to everyone you meet, then find another business!
7. Network, network, network! Join organizations, such as Chambers of Commerce, professional groups, civic groups, etc. and any type of organization to which your target market might belong. Attend community events like business open-houses or neighborhood picnics.
Sales master Joe Girard lives by his “Law of 250”, which states that everyone knows about 250 people well enough to invite to their wedding or to be in attendance at their funeral. Lesson: Perhaps the person you’re speaking with isn’t interested in what you offer, but there’s a good chance s/he knows someone who is 250 of them!
8. Use attention-getting devices — make yourself visible. Always have business cards on hand to distribute. Have a t-shirt personalized with your business name and wear it when you run errands. Wear an outfit or uniform that shows the world who you are. UPS has taken their identity as seen in their brown trucks and uniforms and embraced it with the tag line in their current commercials, “What can brown do for you?”
9. Talk and teach. Approach local organizations about being a guest speaker at their next meeting. Give a workshop that is open to public and is low-cost/no-cost for participants and discuss a particular aspect of your business, or demonstrate what you do.
Offer them valuable information, but leave them hungry for more. For example, a financial planner might offer a free seminar called, “Planning for Retirement as a Thirty-something” or a bank loan officer might offer a workshop in conjunction with a real estate agency called, “Everything a First-Time Homebuyer Needs to Know But is Too Scared to Ask.” Or, work with your local college or recreation department and get paid to teach what you know.
10. Implement 5 a day. Make a list of all the creative ways you can market your business, and implement 5 of them per day.
Remember, in Tightwad Marketing, you’re limited only by your imagination!

What is a Virtual Assistant and Why You Need One

A virtual assistant (typically abbreviated to VA) is self-employed individual that provides professional administrative, technical, or creative (social) assistance to clients remotely from a home office.
Virtual Assistants provide services like email management, customer support/help desk, social media set-up and management, web design and management, transcription, graphic work, calendar management, research, data entry and more.  The best thing about a VA is that they are independent contractors so you don’t have to pay for office space, employee taxes and all those other things that come with having an assistant in your brick and mortar office.
You save money as you don’t need to cover the expenses for:  hardware (Va’s have their own computers, printers and other office equipment), health insurance, vacation time, sick time and wasted time in the office when they have no tasks to do.  There are some really big benefits to outsourcing to a virtual worker.  You may be wondering what kind of tasks can you entrust to a person that is not in your office sitting near you?

What a VA can do for you and your business

There are many things a VA can do for you.  Something you need to focus on is that with the help of a VA, you can stop spending so much of your time on projects that are time consuming and eat up your precious energy.  You can then truly focus on things that you enjoy and that grow and benefit your business.  You may find that once you hand over these tedious tasks that you don’t like doing and found so time consuming, your VA will complete them much quicker as their skill-sets are much different than yours.

Things a VA can do for you:

Email management
Document creation and organization
Report creation
Calendar management
Content management
Social media set up and management
Website design and management
Maintain database of clients/contacts
Send billings/invoices
Email Marketing – via software
Webinar meetings
Video creation and training
Project Management
Internet research
Travel Planning
Blog Preparation
Proofreading / Transcription / Editing
Much more

After reading this you should be able to see how much a VA can help you and your business.  Think about the top three things that need to be done daily and you don’t like doing them and these can be given to a VA.  Once you do that you can start thinking about the things you never seem to have time to do, these can be given to a VA as well.

Give us a call or send us an email to schedule your FREE 30-minute consultation and we can discuss how AOI can help you take over these tasks that are taking too much of your time so you can get back to the important task of growing your business and doing the things you love!

All About Twitter Mentions and Why You Should Use Them

Great Blog Post by My Friend Carrie!

Twitter Love: @Mentions

I know some people don’t like Twitter for its fast-paced nature and short message restriction, but it’s actually one of my favorite social media platforms – precisely because it is so fast-paced.
I see a lot of real estate professionals on Twitter and some of y’all are absolute rock stars, and some are well…. Not.
So I thought I’d give you guys a super quick tip that you can start doing right now to improve your experience.
If you are a Twitter pro and already know the wisdom I am about to impart, please share your guru status with others by sharing this article.
For the rest of us mere mortals:

@Mentions

An @mention is a tweet where a specific Twitterer (is that even a word?) is mentioned, or tagged. Where it shows up will depend on where in the tweet the @mention is located.
Beginning a tweet with @username will cause that tweet to show up in the user’s feed, but not be broadcast to your followers in the general Twitter stream. Tweets are public, so it will be accessible to anyone, but other users who do not follow you and the user both will not see the tweet unless they view the conversation later on. Make sense?
However, putting the @username later in the tweet will cause the tweet to be broadcast to all your followers and therefore, the general Twittersphere.
Rock star tip: place a period { . } before the username to both send the tweet to someone and allow everyone to see it.
You can @mention an unlimited number of users in one tweet, but the Twitter 140 character limit still applies.

What this means for you and your business

Why would you want to @mention a user and how will that help in your social networking?
Because engagement is the name of the game. It’s not enough to amass a huge following, and constantly be sending out the same recycled messages over and over (more on that in a later post).
Social media networking is exactly like social networking offline – it’s one giant cocktail party.
If you were at a chamber event, would you just walk up to a random stranger, introduce yourself, and then proceed to monopolize the entire conversation talking only about your business? You could do that, but you know what would happen – they would mumble some excuse about needing to speak with someone on the other side of the room and avoid you the rest of the night.
So don’t do it on Twitter, either.

How You Can Use This Now

  • @mention an author whose amazing book on real estate you just read – and a nugget you gleaned from it. It lets your followers and that amazing person’s followers know you are constantly educating yourself.
  • @mention clients at various milestones in your transaction/relationship with them (you do have clients follow you on Twitter, yes?)
  • @mention a referral partner, thanking them when they send you a client or deal
  • @mention the speaker from the fab training you just attended (again builds authority and credibility)
  • @mention a city or landmark in your farm area, showing others in that same geographic region you are the go-to person for real estate there.
Doing these quick action items can help change your Twitter experience, making it more enjoyable for you and your followers, increase your exposure across the Twittersphere, and possibly help you get more business.
Isn’t that why you’re on Twitter in the first place?
How do you use @mentions on Twitter to engage and increase your reach? Leave a tip or two in the comments and share the Twitter love.
Oh, and don’t forget to follow me on Twitter!

Twitter Alpha One Tip - Discover Missing Website Mentions

Discover Missing Website Mentions With IFTTT

Twitter does a great job of letting you know when someone mentions you in a tweet. However, it doesn’t notify you when someone mentions your website without mentioning your Twitter username. You might be surprised by how many hidden mentions you have!
Here’s how to find missing website mentions with Twitter Search and IFTTT.
Do a Twitter Search
In the Twitter search box, enter your web address (including the http:// or https://), followed by a space, a dash (-), and your Twitter username. For example, for Social Media Examiner you’d enter: http://socialmediaexaminer.com/ -smexaminer.
twitter search
Search Twitter for website mentions without username mentions.
When you add a dash before a word, that word is excluded from the search. In this case, you’re excluding your Twitter username so the results don’t include mentions or replies. There’s no point in including mentions in the search because you’ve already been notified of them in Notifications.
After you run your search, you’ll see tweets that link to your website but don’t mention your company’s Twitter handle.
website mentions
Review your search results to see who has tweeted links to your website without mentioning your Twitter handle.
Now you know what people are tweeting about your website and you can start engaging with users to generate leads and opportunities to build relationships.
Set Up an Email Notification
Manually searching Twitter every day for missing website mentions can be time-consuming. With IFTTT, you can set up a recipe so you’ll automatically receive an email notification when someone tweets a link to your website.
To get started, set up a free IFTTT account. Then click on My Recipes, followed by the Create a Recipe button.
ifttt create recipe
Create a new recipe in IFTTT.
First you’re going to create the trigger, which is when there’s a new search result for your website mention in Twitter. To do this, click the This link.
ifttt trigger channel
First choose the trigger channel for your recipe.
Then choose Twitter for the trigger channelStart typing Twitter in the search box and click the Twitter icon when it appears.
On the next page, select the New Tweet from Search option for the trigger.
Now it’s time to use the Twitter search query you used above: Enter your website URL, followed by space, a dash, and then your Twitter username. When you’re finished, click the Create Trigger button.
ifttt trigger
Enter the Twitter search text for the trigger.
The next step is to create the action for the recipe. This is the part of the recipe that will send the email to you. Click on the That link in the “If This Then That” text.
Select Mail for the action channel by typing “mail” in the search box and then clicking the Email icon.
ifttt action channel
Choose the action channel for your recipe.
On the next screen, select Send Me an Email for the action.
Now, you’ll compose the email that’s triggered when someone links to your website in a tweet. You can choose the wording for the subject and body of the email. Be sure to include the username of the author of the tweet, the tweet text, and the link to the tweet itself (so you can click on that link to reply).
To add this information, click on the blue flask icon to the right of each field. Here’s an example.
ifttt complete action fields
Create your alert email for Twitter website mentions.
When you’re finished, click Create Action. The next screen shows your finished recipe. Once you click Create Recipe, your alert service is set up.

If you receive a lot of these alerts, it’s a good idea to set up a filter for these messages in your email app. You can move these alerts automatically to a special folder so that they don’t clog up your inbox. At set times each day, you can go through your website alerts and respond to them quickly and easily.
